National Guard Planning Move to Buck Hill, Burrillville

http://states.ng.mil/sites/RI/Pages/RegionalTrainingInstituteRelocationProposal.aspx
Click on states, for the "Rest of the Story" and also click on the 12-10-14 Burrillville Town Council meeting video for the discussion on the very serious subject. The Rhode Island National Guard did not give our Town Council enough time to discuss and make a recommendation of their views. How about a Public Hearing on something this important that will effect every future generation in Northern Rhode Island. The pristine Wallum Lake is the( Last) body of fresh potable drinking water we have left in the State of Rhode Island and should be used gravity fed to the Pascoag residents who are being double billed from Harrisville's system. In 2004 when I ran for Dist. 47 the Rhode Island Guard wanted to come up with the Blackhawk Helicopters Training site and was narrowly put on the back burner to now. I do not want to see another North Smithfild, R.I. Nike Site "Brownfield "or the largest polluted under ground plume that is under Cape Cod and moving from the neglect and burying at the Military Base there.  Wayne G. Barber

Burrillville Land Trust Acquisition

Beautiful Open Space

The Burrillville Land Trust completed years of work by acquiring two properties totaling 75 pristine acres of woodland that will be preserved as open space. This was a collaboration effort of the Burrillville Land Trust, Brown University and the National Grid to complete a story with a happy ending for all North West Rhode Island for now and future generations to enjoy. The two properties will be added to the exiting properties owned by the Burrillville Land Trust and will be used for nature walks, walking trails and more. National grids section was around 20 acres. The 55 acre Brown University property was added to the to an existing 86 acre lot of the Edward D.Vock Conservation Area. This was the first piece of the rural area that was acquired in 2008. The Brown and Vock properties have one common boundary and provide a contiguous forest tree canopy and land for wildlife, photography, snow shoe, bird observation, water and recreation.
I know this area well and a vast variety of native wildlife abound there. It also has some of the native orchids in its moist soil that support the "Lady Slipper" and real nice wild mushrooms. It has the small pond and a beautiful brook from years gone by of farming in the area and when the mist freezes is breath taking. The pond supports
small wildlife and a occasional blue heron can be seen. The celebration was attended by our local officials and about 45 concerned citizens and members of the Burrillville Land Trust headed up by President Paul A. Roselli. This area is on Jackson School Road at the intersection of a old dirt fire road called Olney Keach Road and the bridge that crosses the stream. You can access the road from either end. From the Burrillville side would be off Rt.100, take a left at the used car lot. If coming from the Glocester side it is off Rt.44 starting up the small curve bear right onto Jackson School House and continue to when it turns dirt to the bridge.
It had to be a slow news day because the local TV Stations also appeared for their nightly news.
Paul Roselli  welcomed the crowd and special guests and was followed by John Luipold-assistant Vice President for Real Estate at Brown University Real Estate Office. Mike Ryan was next, National Grid's Director of Government Affairs for Rhode Island. Senator Jack Read and then Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. Senator Read gave me a nice interview and seemed very sincere on my questions of open space and the environment. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse beckoned his personal aide to add me to all of the environmental press releases that will come out of the Federal Government and I can tell you that it works already on my e-mail " Outdoor Scene" Radio Broadcast files.

The Burrillville Land Trust is a non-profit 501(c) (3) land trust in the Town of Burrillville. Their mission is to preserve and protect the rural character of the Town of Burrillville. They hold a monthly meeting and are always looking for new members.    W. Gauvin Barber

Burrillville Broncos 2014 Football Champs

Coach Ferraro
The Rhode Interscholastic League Division IV Burrillville Broncos capped off the Ocean States only perfect high school football season with a record of 12-0 and a Super Bowl Victory at Cranston Stadium with a hard fought 54 -13 win over the Scituate Spartans and also earlier this fall won the prestigious annual Thanksgiving victory over arch rival Ponaganset Chieftians with a final score of 41-12 at home in the 3 inch early snow storm for a all-time 15-14 Series lead.
Burrillville Bronco's 54  Scituate Spartans 13

I say hard fought because the Spartans had stopped the opening drive by the heavily favored Broncos and went 82 yards for a pre- mature 7 point lead. Spartans quarterback Mike Winfield hooked up with a spiral to Mike D'Allesandro.             Was the upset going to play out today ? Fate went the Spartans way again with Tyler Farias intercepted on the one yard line before giving up a punt for a Bronco solid field position and then the Burrillville Broncos started dissecting the Spartans defense to shreds.

The Broncos quarterback, captain and a senior 6-6 Isaiah DeSilva settled down with a 9 for 16 performance for 146 yards and two touchdowns and Junior Zach Tayes did the rest for a MVP performance of 330 all-purpose yards on 32 carries for 283 yards and added 3 catches for another 47 yards and 5 touchdowns.  Tayes also played both sides of the field with a middle linebacker role. The crowd was relieved after burner Tayes who only appeared in 4 plays on Thanksgiving Day with a elbow injury which turned out to be a pinched nerve.
The Super Bowl game was not all offense for the Broncos with the defense forcing three fumbles and a interception.
It takes more than two players to win a Super Bowl State Championship and even a usual lineman Nick Samek chipped in with a touchdown. Just to name a few of the many stellar performing Broncos, Captains Justin Deschamps and Jake Wall, Billy Pollard, Jake Ferreira, outstanding junior Riley Tupper. Deschamps also completes a great high school baseball career and will now see if a division 4 school athlete can receive a good scholarship. Tupper breaks the family mold of his uncles having legendary high school soccer careers. Senior Jack Collins closed out his career with a great effort and sophomore Zach Lefebvre represents the future Broncos. Coach Hebert must have been looking down with a big smile after leaving this earth so early. This marks another plaque for the Broncos and the first in high school football since 2005. Some parents sad the team should have been in a higher State Division for the competition experience and others say that you still have to show up every week. I think the community pride shown by the huge victory parade of parents, fans, fire trucks and policeman will be a lasting impression on the departing seniors and future players to try out for the football team. Burrillville has been known for years as one of the hottest school boy hockey factories in New England and if the football team stays up right a few more years they could join the puck carriers.

2014 Burrillville Town Council and School Committe Sworn In

November 25, 2014  New Burrillville Town Council and School Board Members Sworn In.

No. Smithfield State Rep. Brian Newberry made the trip to the meeting to swear in the new members.

The meeting had Council women Kimberly Brissette Brown (DEM) nominating mid term John F. Pacheco III (Rep)for the new chair and it passed 7-0. She then nominated veteran Stephen N. Rawson (Rep) for the new vice chairman and that also passed by a 7-0 tally .
The new 2014 Town Council will comprise the following members for the next two years.
President John F. Pacheco III  (Rep)
Vice President Stephen N. Rawson ( Rep)
David J. Place (Rep)
Donald A. Fox (Rep)
Nancy F. Binns (Dem)
Kimberly Brissette Brown (Dem)
Michelle D. Bouchard (Dem)

Since 1984 the Democrats have had a strangle hold on the Burrillville Town Council. Tonight that all changed. The new alignment will be in place for the next two years until the next election cycle in 2016. In 2016 if the republicans win just one of the three seats available they will keep control. The democrats would have to sweep the three positions to regain control. Our town charter has the odd, even cycle of three council spots open for four years, then four council seats for four years. This system seems to work good in our town with the continuity. New comer Donald A. Fox garnered the highest vote total with his name recognition of running two consecutive attempts to unseat Cale Keable (Dem)for the Dist. 47 seat. The coat tail effect of Allen Fung (Rep) who garnered the highest vote total in town at 1861 39.9 % to (Mod) candidate Robert Healy at 1371 and 29.4% Gina Raimondo (Dem) who won the Governors race statewide had 1334 for 28.6 %
In 2012 Pacheco won the only republican seat to join Rawson and Place for the third seat of the seven member panel. Till this day I think that his name Pacheco helped him in that election after another Edwin Pacheco had a popular career in Town and State politics and ending up the Democratic State Chairman. Also history will show that a advantage of the placement on the ballot at the top is a distinct advantage for a higher vote total. The coat tail effect came back into play when President Barrack Obama (DEM) winning again and Binns drawing a amazing 3014 votes to lead the star studded field. In 2010, the top vote getter was Wallace Lees,(Dem) at 2248 and new comer town fireman and Dem. Town Chairman Edward Blanchard at 2246 in the low turn out non presidential election. Rawson and Place rode the coat tail of Governor hopeful John Robitaille (Rep) 2286 votes who slaughtered Frank Capri (Dem) at 1170 votes and Chaffee the eventual State wide winner at 1503 votes. In 2008, a Presidential year election had the Obama ripple effect with Binns, Kevin Heitke, and Margaret Dudley, a former Dem. chair running as a (Ind) In 2006, all trends were off with Kevin Blais (Ind) who rode the emotions of the Town percolating because of the (Junkyard Ordinance)

After talking with Rawson, Town Manager Mike Woods and the Town Historian Pat Merthens it appears the last time the Republicans had control was in 1984 after the big turmoil of the Police Chief Archey Menard controversy. The Town is in a sound position with pensions and the Town Manager under his new contract with the previous Council. The great thing in the Town of Burrillville is the quality of the candidates on both sides and the independents who actually are forcing us into a September Primary each election which is great for the voters and Democracy in it's finest form the way our fore-fathers had planned it.
The school committee is composed of non-partisan candidates and new-comers Sylvia A. St.Pierre, Alexandra LeClair and Joshua Tessier who joined incumbent Raymond J. Trinque to fill the vacant seats for the next session.
If by chance in our Towns recent history,( Wally Lees, Kevin Blais, Bill Gonyea, Louie Bleweis,) are not able to complete their terms the next in line is Ed Blanchard, (Dem)Town Council and Donison Allen for the School Committee
